SLA-ASIS&Tsc visits the Sunset Reference Center

SLA-ASIS&Tsc visits the Sunset Reference Center

On March 3, 2014, the SLA-ASIS&Tsc visited the Sunset Reference Center Special Library at the school of Travel Industry Management.

Librarian Huston Ladner gave us a tour of the facility and answered our questions about the collections and management of the reference center. As LIS students we had the chance to explore Hawaii’s largest collection of resource material related to tourism.

We learned that:

1. The collection is very specialized as it has very specific materials related to the travel industry in general but Hawaii specifically,

2. The travel industry students regularly use the collection, in addition to the materials that they can find in Hamilton.

3. An interesting fact about the collection is that researchers are involved as well as the Librarian in selecting, and weeding the collection.

Thank you to our own Monica Ames who is the librarian’s assistant and to Kara Plamann – Wagoner for getting us organized.
